Meet our Artistic Director

Jon Wilson (photo by Douglas Llyod)Jon Wilson, a graduate of Binghamton University's Theatre Department, is with the start of the 2009-10 season serving as Appleseed Productions' artistic director for his twelfth season. Since taking that position, Jon has appeared regularly on- and off-stage at Appleseed.

On-stage at Appleseed, Jon has appeared in: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest as "Aide Warren," Whose Life Is It Anyway? as "Philip Hill," Spider's Web as "Oliver Costello," Much Ado About Nothing as "Hugh Otecake," 10th Anniversary Show, I Hate Hamlet as "Andrew Rally," Closer Than Ever, the 2000 Old Time Christmas Radio Hour as "Steve Snidely," George Washington Slept Here as "Steve Eldridge," The Heiress as "Arthur Townsend," the 1999 Old Time Christmas Radio Hour as "Bugsy," all three productions in the Unsung Broadway series, and six of our Passion dramas.

Jon Wilson - SALTY Award for Best Director, High School (photo by Michael Davis)Jon has been nominated for and won numerous theatre awards since coming to Syracuse. Awards he has won are:

  • 2008-09 SALTY Lifetime Achievement Award;

  • 2007-08 SALTY Award for Best Director/High School;

  • 2006 SALT Award for Supporting Actor of the Year in a Musical;

  • TANYS Merit awards for Achievement in Production Design and Execution, Achievement in Visual Impact, Outstanding Program Content, and for Excellence in Ensemble Acting  as a member of the Cuckoo's Next cast;

  • The Prestigious Agatha Crusty Award (four-time winner); and

  • The Point! (six-time winner).

Awards for which Jon has been nominated, but did not win: SALT Awards for Director of the Year/Play (2007), Leading Actor of the Year in a Play (2005), and Director of the Year (2003).

Jon is not only involved with theatre at Appleseed, he also has worked with many other Syracuse-area community theatre companies and high schools:

  • The ACME Mystery Co. performing in Bad Kitty: A Holiday Whodunnit, Deadly Inheritance, Death Joins the Club, Death Takes a Cruise, Die Another Death, Florence of Moravia, Hijacked Holiday, I'm Fred, I'm Dead, Nick Saint: Private Elf, and No Time for Death;

  • Don't Feed the Actors;

  • Eleguin Productions working on Enter the Moose, There's a Moose in the Oven, In the Waters of the Jordan, Found a Peanut, There's a Bun in the Oven, and Tying the Knot;

  • ES-M High School as scenic designer for Once Upon a Mattress and How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and master carpenter for All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten;

  • Gifford Family Theatre performing in Lily's Purple Plastic Purse, and as director of Princess Rabbit, The Invisible Dragon, Every Actor Tells a Story, Myth Interpretations, The Revenge of the Space Pandas or Binky Rudich and the Two-Speed Clock, and Write Me a Murder;

  • Magic Circle Children’s Theatre performing in Jack and the Beanstalk, Hansel and Gretel, Sleeping Beauty, and Beauty & the Beast;

  • Opening Night Productions performing in Lend Me a Tenor;

  • Salt City Center performing in Brigadoon and Man of La Mancha;

  • Solvay High School as director and production designer of Amateurs, Over My Dead Body, All Because of Agatha, The Curious Savage, and The Odd Couple (Female Version); director, scenic designer, lighting designer of How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, Nunsense: The Mega-Musical, Once Upon a Mattress, High Society, Bye Bye Birdie, and Working; and director and lighting designer for The Wiz;

  • Syracuse Children's Theatre as director of Bugsy Malone Jr.;

  • Syracuse Civic Theatre performing in The Diary of Anne Frank;

  • Syracuse Shakespeare Festival performing in A Midsummer Night's Dream and Love in Shakespeare;

  • Syracuse Symphony Pops Chorus;

  • The Talent Co. as resident director for and performing in Noises Off, and performing in Hello, Dolly!, George M!, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat;

  • Theatre ’90 performing in The Butterfingers Angel and 42nd Street;

  • Town of Manlius performing in West Side Story; and

  • The Wit's End Players performing in Pippin and The Mystery of Edwin Drood, plus special guest appearance in The Will Rogers Follies.

  • He also appears as "Joe Smart, Jr." in the locally-produced independent film, Prisoners of Freedom.

Currently, Jon is appearing in some ACME Mystery Co. and Don't Feed the Actors shows throughout the next few months, and will be appearing as "Otto Frank" in The Diary of Anne Frank for Syracuse Children's Theatre at the end of March and in Miss Nelson Has A Field Day for Gifford Family Theatre in May.

Outside of Syracuse, Jon has worked with such theatre companies as Playwrights Horizons, Soho Rep, Hangar Theatre, Cider Mill Playhouse, and Tri-Cities Opera Company.
