Appleseed will be accepting script submissions for the 2008-09 season beginning August 1, 2007.

The Process

1)  One production directed by the Artistic Director in the upcoming season will be chosen by the Steering Committee at their June meeting prior to the beginning of the script search submission process for that upcoming season. (e.g. scripts to be considered for the 2001-02 season must be submitted by May of 2000 and voted on in June of 2000.) The genre of the show (i.e. whether a comedy, drama, musical, etc.), but not the show itself, will then made known to the Appleseed membership, so that prospective directors can then base their submission choices on that information.

a)  The Artistic Director will submit the scripts for the shows s/he desires to direct to the Steering Committee by the May meeting, including one page summaries of each script.

i)    The Artistic Director is to submit at least three scripts, which should include variety of genres.

b)  The Steering Committee will review those summaries and be ready to vote on which show the Artistic Director will direct at the June meeting.

i)    If the Artistic Director desires to direct more than one production during a season, s/he must submit all other proposals through the normal script search process.

2)  Proposed scripts are to be submitted to the Artistic Director between the dates of August 1st and November 1st to be considered for the upcoming season. (e.g. scripts to be considered for the 2001-02 season must be submitted between Aug. 1 and Nov. 1 of 2000.) The director must submit the script. A call for scripts will be announced in the Clubhouse News.

3)  The Artistic Director will then send out a Script Search Packet to directors who have submitted a script within the designated time period. The packets will contain an introductory letter, Script Proposal Worksheet, a time line of dates for the process, and any other pertinent information.

4)  The Script Proposal Worksheets are due back to the Artistic Director by December 1st if the script is to be eligible to continue to the next stage of the selection process.

5)  Throughout the submission process, the Script Search Panel members will read all submitted scripts and meet in December to discuss the submissions based on the information from the Script Proposal Worksheets.

6)  During the month of January, the Script Search Panel will meet with each director individually to discuss their submissions and address any concerns.

a)  Musical Directors who have committed to a proposed script will be expected to attend this meeting.

7)  The Script Search Panel will then meet to select possible slates of shows, which are then submitted by the Artistic Director to the Steering Committee at their March meeting. At this meeting, Steering Committee members will also receive a one-page summary of each script submitted, which will be prepared by the Artistic Director, and a report detailing the Panel’s reasons for selections/rejections of the submitted plays. All Steering Committee members are expected to read the report and those summaries (and are encouraged to read the entire scripts), and be ready to vote at the April meeting on the upcoming Center Season slates as proposed by the Script Search Panel.

8)  Individuals will be limited to submitting four scripts for consideration in an upcoming season, but no more than two of the same genre (i.e. comedy, drama, musical, etc.).

9)  All proposing directors are required to meet with the Finance Secretary to discuss production budget prior to returning the Script Proposal Worksheets to the Artistic Director.

10) Each proposing director will be invited to an individual Exit Interview with the Artistic Director to discuss the process and its outcome.

Script Criteria

Because Appleseed Productions is founded on, and marketed as "family entertainment," all scripts presented by Appleseed will reflect that identity in the following ways:

1)  Productions will contain subject matter and language that ranges from "G" through "PG-13" (movie ratings) in content.

2)  Scripts presented by Appleseed will reflect a standard of high quality in writing, be in good taste, and function successfully as a whole.

3)  Appleseed will select scripts that can be presented credibly with the technical resources and performance space available to the company.

Director Eligibility

In order to be considered as a director for Appleseed Productions, you must have directed, assisting directed, or music directed a production at Appleseed. (Special Note: All persons who satisfied eligibility requirements prior to the changes made for the 2000-01 season retain their eligibility)

A person who would like to direct for Appleseed Productions but who does not meet the eligibility requirements as outlined above, must contact the Artistic Director and provide the Artistic Director with his/her directorial resume. The Artistic Director may then submit that person to the Steering Committee for approval as a prospective director, which must be obtained before that person is eligible to submit a script to the Script Search Panel. Any such prospective director must also choose a Mentor from a list of candidates provided by the Steering Committee prior to submission. If that person’s script is not selected for the upcoming season, s/he retains that approval and is eligible to submit scripts for consideration in future Script Search processes, but is still required to work with a Mentor throughout his/her first actual directorial assignment with Appleseed. At the conclusion of that first assignment, the new director will meet with the Artistic Director for a debriefing of his/her experience.
