You can now write and submit your bio
online. Be sure to write your name exactly as you
want it to appear in the program. Below is a sample bio, as well
as some tips and guidelines for writing one.
Joe Schmoe (Jim
Bob the Sailor)
is appearing in his second show with Appleseed Productions. Previously, he
appeared as “Jim Bob the Cook” in The Kitchen and “Jim Bob the
Butler” in The Butler Ate It. Joe has worked with other local
theatre companies including The Wit’s End Players as “Jim Bob the Banker”
in How Much is a Dollar Worth Now?, The Talent Co. as “Jim Bob the
Singer” in A Musical, and Syracuse Civic Theatre as “Jim Bob the
Grownup” in What’s the Opposite of Peter Pan? When not playing
various “Jim Bobs”, Joe works as a machine operator at a local button
factory, where he was recently named Operator of the Month, which comes
with its own (temporary) parking spot. Joe thanks his wife, Josephine, his
children, Jimmy and Janie, his amazing director, and the very talented and
fun cast and crew. This is the place to be!
For those of you who may never have written
a bio, here are some pointers about what to and not
to include:
Include: Other productions you’ve worked on, including the title,
where it was done, and your role in it; your education; other pertinent
theatrical facts about you; your “real life” job; a special “catch phrase”
that you always include in your bios; and special thanks to family and/or
friends.
Do not include:
Inside jokes that absolutely no one will understand; extremely
personal facts; or anything that would not be considered PG-13 or lower.
Depending of the amount
of space available in the program, your bio may be edited down to a
smaller size. If this is done, every effort will be made to leave in the
essentials. You will be given an opportunity to proof your bio for any
corrections that need to be made before the program goes to final print.
If at that time you have any questions about how your bio was edited,
please talk to our Artistic Director, Jon Wilson.
If you have never
written a bio before, use the questions below and sample bio
(above) to help you in your writing endeavor.
(1) In what
past productions have you participated? What parts or crew positions
did you fill? You can choose to provide a full list or simply a few
selected career highlights. You may also choose provide
show/part/part/company information or only one or two of those
elements.
(2) What other “tidbits” about your
past, present, or future would audience members be interested in
knowing? Some examples you may or may not choose include: your
grade, past non-theatrical achievements, what college you plan to
attend (if you're a senior), other clubs or sports teams,
aspirations, shoe size, etc.
(3) Are
there any “Thank Yous” or acknowledgements you would like included in
your bio?
